Elvis ALVARADO
My name is Elvis Alvarado. I was raised in East Oakland. My education in Oakland has not been the best. The schools I went to during my childhood were poor and did not have many advanced classes to prepare me for college. It was only in my senior year in high school that I received a lot of help from the admins in my school. They gave me the necessary information needed to apply for college and supported me through the process. But that was not enough to inform me what I need to know to navigate through college. Since my first year of college, I have been a part of MURPPS which support us in school and teaches us what we need to know to be able to do undergraduate research. As of now I am looking forward to doing research in Mathematics or Computer Science.
Erica CARDINALE-LOPEZ
I am a first year pursuing a degree in statistics. I have always done well in math but was never as interested in it until I took AP statistics in high school. I am also interested in doing some type of research, but do not know in what yet. Lastly, I aim to go to graduate school to further my education.
Karen FLORES
I am an undergraduate student at the University of California Davis and my major is Mathematics. I aspire to become a high school math teacher and continue my studies to attend graduate school to earn my master’s and doctorate degree to later become a professor. I joined the MURPPS program because I am interested in learning what large impacts mathematics research can have on the world and how it can expand my knowledge of mathematics.
Bin LAMA
Hello, my name is Bin Lama. I am currently a first year Computer Science Major. As of right now, I am not sure if I want to pursue a future in Computer Science or not which is why I am taking different courses in different fields. I hope to do research one day as I believe that research enhances ones’ understanding on whatever field we are interested in. Thank you for reading this introduction.
Yan Ting LI
I am a first-year chemistry major and I hope to work in a crime lab in the future. Although I am interested in forensics, I would like to explore different fields to find an area that I love doing.
Rogelio MATA
I am a first generation college student pursuing a major in Physics. I was born and raised in Mexico, in 2011 I moved to the United States of America. In 2014 I was accepted in UC Davis as an undergraduate, declared as a physics major. In order to know if I really wanted to stay in physics I challenge myself by taking the physics Honors Series. As a junior I was part of a research team lead by Professor Mani Tripathi. I was assigned to learn COMSOL, the software used to analyze capacitors and dielectric materials.
Jose “Tony” MORENO
My name is Jose Antonio Moreno from Los Banos, California and I am a 4th year Pharmaceutical Chemistry Student at UC Davis.  I began studying Pharm Chem because I was deeply interested in folk medicine after travelling to Mexico as a child and young adult, which led to an interest in natural products, and their role in pharmaceuticals.  I will be attending graduate school after graduation, I just have to finish applying and actually get accepted first!  Currently I do organic synthesis research in the Shaw lab, where I am investigating the diastereoselectivity of N-sulfonyl imines.  I would like to continue to do research in the future involving natural product discovery, isolation, characterization, and synthesis, biosynthetic pathways of plant polyketides, biotechnology, medicinal chemistry, and drug design to help discover new drugs for various illnesses around the world.
Andrew PRESTON
I’m a third-year Computer Science Major. I always liked electronics and was specifically interested in the programming aspect. During my Senior year at Richmond High School, I joined the robotics team, Team 841. I became a programmer for the team and I really enjoyed it, my favorite part of programming is debugging. I still wish to do research and I am actively looking for research opportunities. I am thinking about going to graduate school to get a Ph. D., and I believe that I can only make a clear decision after I start doing research.
